  Visiting scientist alsetalokin demonstrates another aspect of the Steorn "Orbo Electromagnetic Interaction". TK: The Orbo appears to use toroidal drive coils, in the units demonstrated in Dublin last Saturday. AL: Yes, and that struck many observers as strange. Theoretically the field of a toroidal coil is at least mostly contained within the core material, and so should produce little attraction/repulsion on an external magnet. But it appears that the Orbo utilizes a different, lesser-known effect. In the Orbo, the magnets of the rotor are attracted "naturally" to the ferrite material of the cores of the drive coils due to the high permeability of the ferrite material. The Orbo effect actually uses the internal field in the core material produced by sending current through the coil, to effectively "turn off" or strongly reduce this natural attraction. So, unlike other magnet pulse motors, the Orbo is sort of "inside out": The attraction exists when the coil power is OFF but is reduced when the power is ON. Steorn have harnessed this rarely-mentioned effect to provide motive power in an electromagnetic pulse motor design. This effect will occur regardless of the shape of the core material, I think. The toroidal form effectively captures the field of the coil's windings and keeps them from contributing to the motive power very much; the motive power comes from switching the core's ability to be attracted by the rotor magnets on and off.
